Tutoring Coordinator Needed

for 2008-09 School Year

Judy Denniston coordinated the Kokomo Church of the Brethren (KCoB) Tutoring Program for five years.  Due to time constraints, Judy had to give up these duties.  The Witness Committee appreciates Candace Good for stepping in as Coordinator for the sixth (2007-08) year of tutoring.  However, Candace regrets that she must also step down.  We will miss their leadership.

Over the years, approximately 150 children have benefited from the efforts of our tutors.  To keep this meaningful community-outreach ministry active for the 2008-09 school year, we need a KCoB member to lead this program.  The Tutoring Coordinator contacts the schools to let them know of the availability of free tutoring, receives referrals from the schools, recruits tutors, and matches tutors to the students.  If you are interested in this important position, please contact Jim Wann (453-1170; jpwann@comcast.net).

Back to School Backpacks

and Hygiene Items

School will start soon.  Kokomo Urban Outreach hopes to supply each of 200 needy Kokomo-Center students with a backpack and hygiene items.  Having a book bag and good hygiene raises self-esteem and makes a child feel normal.  The items needed are:

·        Backpacks (watch for sales)

·        Toothpaste

·        Toothbrush

·        Shampoo

·        Bath soap

·        Comb/pick

·        Wash cloth

·        Deodorant for older children

The goal is to pass out the bags on August 8, so please bring your donations to the church by Thursday, August 7.  Please bring backpacks and/or hygiene items to our church, to the basket under the east stairs.  Please label your donated items for the “Backpack Program.”  Contact Jim Wann (453-1170) if you have questions.

Men’s Prayer Breakfast

As many of you may know, Colony Camp at Camp Mack is scheduled for August 15, 16, and 17.  This camp falls on the same weekend as the Men’s Prayer Breakfast.  In an effort to support both Colony Camp and the Men’s Prayer Breakfast, I have moved the Prayer Breakfast to the 4th Saturday in August (8-23-08).  It will be held in the Church Fellowship Hall from 8:00-9:00 a.m.  Please invite your neighbors and friends along with your Grandpa, Father, and Son’s for this time of fellowship and prayer.

For more information please contact; Jeff Ryals, 765-455-3604 or cell, 765-461-0554.

Midwest Peacemakers Conference - August 23

“Nonviolent Transformations

at Home and Abroad”

This conference will feature two well-known Davids: David Waas, Manchester College historian emeritus will help us grasp what is happening in Israel and the Middle East, and show how nonviolence provides the greatest promise.  David Jehnsen, founder of the Institute for Human Rights and Responsibilities, will tell how the nonviolent “Churches Helping Churches” program is helping New Orleans area people get back on their feet.

The conference will again be held in the Brick Room of the Brethren Retirement Center, 752

Chestnut Street, Greenville, Ohio, August 23 from 11:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  Lively discussion with the speakers should help confirm the importance of Jesus’ call to nonviolence.  The carry-in lunch always provides for great fellowship, and the worship and singing will surely lift our spirits.
